Why do I need minerals?

Created by BabyCenter

Minerals help you to stay healthy and grow a healthy baby. If you eat foods from these 4 main food groups you will get the minerals you need.

  • Fruit and vegetables. Eating lots of different coloured fruit and vegetables will give you lots of goodness.
  • Starchy, filling foods, such as rice, roti and potatoes (aloo). Base your meals around starchy foods. This will give you plenty of energy.
  • Protein-rich foods, such as daals, eggs, fish, poultry and meat. These foods are also good sources of iron. They will help you to stay strong.
  • Calcium-rich foods such as milk, paneer, coconut milk, cheese and curd.

Adding iodised salt to your food will give you iodine. If salt is iodised, it will say this on the packet. You need plenty of iodine in your diet to help your baby's brain to develop. Try to have some every day.

By eating a range of these foods you will be able to stay fit and strong, as well as grow a healthy baby.
